Ward Reservation Trail Work - June 16, 2007

North Shore NEMBA's final trail care event for this spring was held at Ward Reservation in Andover, MA.  Don't worry if you missed this one because we'll be having two more trail care events in the Fall.  These events are all part of the Merlin-NEMBA Trail Care Series.

We had a very ambitious trail project planned for this trail care event.  The work involved adding 96' of boardwalk and and a bunch of tread improvement (rockwork) to the Five Crossings Trail.  The boardwalks included one fairly long boardwalk, a shorter baordwalk, and a simple plank boardwalk.  There was not enough time to build the plank boardwalk which will be completed later this summer.  The tread improvements involved rock armoring four wet areas along the trail.  Unfortunately, we were only able to complete the largest of the four rock armoring projects.  Two of the remaining three armoring projects have already been completed since the sixteenth and the final tread project will completed later this summer.  We had tremendous cooperation from The Trustees of Reservations on this project and the efforts of all volunteers involved has resulted in meaningful improvement at this great riding location.

As usual, lunch was provided once we finished working for the day.  The Trustees provided access to a mowed field on the property where we able to enjoy our lunch and hang out for a bit, taking in the beautiful weather after our post trail work ride.  Yes, we managed to get in a ride.  Although, it was a bit shorter than normal since everyone was worn out from a hard day of work.
